Making Use of Posted Photos

What to Do With Photos

I have been posting hundreds of photos taken of our soccer teams. Here are some ideas on how to deal with it, enjoy them, and snag what you really want.

Pick out What You Like

Fotki is pretty good at scanning a set of thumbnails, and then clicking through individual shots. When you see a photo you like (say it has your child in it...) use the comments to let me know. Tell me why you like it. Even if I don't read it, you can use that to find it later on.

Download it

When viewing individual shots, below the shot is a link that reads "Get Original Uploaded Photo". If you select that, the browser will display that photo in its full size. It's not just big. You can grab that.

Use the browser's File | Save As menu selections, and save a copy of that jpeg. The photos, technically, are coypright by me, but I want to share them with you so please have at them. You should use your "My Pictures" folder unde r the "My documents" folder, and create another folder in there called "Soccer 2006" or something like that. I put all my photos in folders by the date they were taken.

Edit

Once the photo is saved you can edit it. The best tool for simple editing is called Irfan View. It is free software written by a very nice chap in Bosnia, and it is really good at cropping and simple corrections. Here is the link to find a download site:
<a href="http://www.irfanview.com/download_sites.htm";>http://www.irfanview.com/download_sites.htm<;/a>

Cropping refers to throwing away what you don't want. With irfanview, you use the mouse to select what you do like, select the Edit | Crop menu, and, voila, what's left is the good stuff. Now save the photo.

You can also ask me to do the same thing in the comments back on fotki.

Advanced topics

Projects

It takes a more advanced photo editor to add the titles, borders, and multiple images together, which I do for our team photos. I'll be doing that again, as always, but I have some ideas for other projects as well.

Montage

I'm going to build a montage of various photos for an advanced team photo. Fotki has very good prices on oversize photos, so an 11x7 is a good price.

If you're interested in a montage of your child, mention that in the comments. It takes an advanced editor, but if you have one and learn how to do it, the time committment is the biggest part, because there is a lot to edit, but the individual steps are straight forward.

As I explore these projects, I'll post some instructions and tips here. Meanwhile, let me know what you want and like, and we can really enjoy these photos.
